Ekadashi is a day dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu. This day is when devotees adore Lord Vishnu and perform fasts, etc. Alongside the fasting during this time, charitable and other remedies are carried out. All year long, females perform many fasts to celebrate their children's birth and ensure the happiness their children will enjoy. The Ekadashi that occurs before Rakshabandhan is known as Putrada Ekadashi. On this date, a lot of importance is given to giving to charity. By the Vedic calendar, the Putrada Ekadashi fast is observed during the 11th day of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month.

The Legend Behind Putrada Ekadashi

Putrada Ekadashi
Lord Krishna told this story about Putrada Ekadashi to King Yudhishthar (the oldest of five Pandavas). There was once a king named Suketuman, who was the ruler of Bhadravati. He was a gracious and generous king but was generally not enthusiastic in his daily life. He was not guilty of any crime or illicit gain in his possessions and believed in goodness and justice. However, the fact that he did not have any son to care for his property after his death was a source of anxiety for him. He believed that without a son, he could never be content in this or any other life.

Amidst depression, He was strolling through the woods to get his mind off of it. He came to the banks of a lake. There, there were a few Sages. He was kind enough to share his agony with them and inquired whether they could help him. In gratitude for his gesture, the group asked him to observe the fast of Putrada Ekadashi and pray to Lord Vishnu to give birth to a son. The king followed his instructions precisely with complete dedication and faith. Within a few days, the queen was aware that she was pregnant, and nine months later, the couple was blessed with a boy baby. The kingdom was blessed with a prince, and the couple got their legal heirs. It has been a tradition to observe the holy fast on Putrada Ekadashi, followed by couples that wish to have children, especially one with a son.
